Like every year, this holiday season flew by and left us dazedly staring at the huge, unwritten 2017 lying in front us. The new year has just begun and is full of possibilities. We can accomplish so much more than we’ve accomplished before. We can change, we can finally become the people we’ve always wanted to be. Or can we?
The idea of new beginnings, turning over a new leaf, starting fresh, and other such concepts is attractive because it helps us put the past behind us and… well… start fresh. But do we really need a complete break with the past in order to make the decision to change and stick to it? Do we really need a new year to make a change?
Psychologically, it’s definitely easier to set new goals at the beginning of a new year but unfortunately as weeks go by our enthusiasm wanes and we find ourselves in the same old routine we tried to change. Besides, we only get a handful of New Years in our lifetime. Do we really want such few opportunities to improve our lives?
Whether we want to take an online course, renovate our house, start saving money, or try to become a vegetarian, we should get to work right away instead of waiting for Monday, the 1st of the month, or New Year’s Day. When these landmarks finally come, our life could be different and maybe we’ll lose interest for these resolutions or something would prevent us from accomplishing them.
If we focus on the fact that life is unpredictable (and short!) we’ll manage to better prioritize our time and our plans for the future. As a smart saying goes, don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Because tomorrow you may not be able to do it anymore.
So, start reaching for your goal whenever you set it. Don’t just make a resolution, also outline a plan on how to fulfil it step by step. This will get you closer to fulfilling your dreams and living the life YOU want to live at all times. No matter how it may change.
If your resolution is to get involved in charity projects, lose weight, or make new friends we can only root for your from the stands. However, if you intend to stay close to your family even if you’re thousands of miles away or if you want to strengthen your relationship with your friends abroad, we can do much more.
Since 2017 is so fresh and promising, make it your most successful year yet! Forget New Year’s resolutions and start making everyday resolutions. And you know what else? Make every day New Year’s Day!
