Every year, across the USA, everything is covered in red, white and blue on July 4, as Americans celebrate the nation’s independence. We learn about it from our parents or in the History classes, but do we know all there is to know about this day? Here are some surprising Independence Day facts you may not know about.

  • Is this the exact date?

    Congress didn’t actually vote for independence on July 4. Twelve of thirteen states approved a resolution for independence on July 2, not July 4, when the declaration was actually adopted. New York didn’t vote until July 9. Many of the signers didn’t attach their names to the document until August 2.

  • The oldest annual 4th of July celebration is held in Bristol, Rhode Island.

    The tradition began 85 years before 4th of July was even recognized as a federal holiday. And it continues to this day. The town of Bristol, Rhode Island is celebrating “America’s Oldest 4th of July Celebration” since 1785.

  • July 4th is the biggest hot dog day

    Americans eat about 150 million hot dogs on the 4th of July – enough to cover the distance from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles five times. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, which is over a century old, takes place on July 4 every year. The record, currently held by Joey Chestnut, is 72 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

  • 15,000 fireworks celebrations take place this day, every year

    According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, around 15,000 fireworks displays will take place for the 4th of July holiday. Though pricing varies, most small towns spend anywhere from $8000-$15,000 for a fireworks display, while larger cities spend millions.
