5 Tips to Beat Homesickness
Whether your job requires you to travel a lot or you’re already an “experienced” expat, homesickness hits you too every once in a while. When this happens, you usually have 2 options:
- embrace it, hide from the world, and cry until it goes away or
- do everything in your power to survive it.
In case the first option doesn’t sound appealing to you, here are a few tips on how you can beat homesickness.
1. Explore the environment
You’re in a foreign country! You have the chance to visit a new place that many people choose as their holiday destination. Look around you, I’m sure you’ll notice tourists who paid quite a lot of money to be there. Since you’re already there, you might as well take advantage and see as many sights as you can. Trust me, homesickness comes and goes and you will eventually grow attached to the place you’re in right now. Time will pass and if you move away you’ll miss it and you’ll have fond memories of this time.
2. Find someone like you
There are a lot of people who feel what you feel everywhere in the world, so who could understand you better than someone going through the same thing? Look around you, you will definitely find other expats or “new guys” who are in the same situation. And who knows, some of them might actually be from your home country! Talking to someone who understands is easy and you will be able to help each other. The best part: you might also make some new friends!
3. Don’t forget about your routine
At home you probably used to wake up at the same time each morning, eat the same kind of breakfast, go to work, then come home and do similar things almost every day. I bet that routine bored you at the time, but it can now make you feel closer to home. So take it with you! Do the things you used to do at home and it will seem like not much has changed. Go jogging in the morning, watch that TV series you used to be hooked on in the evening, or cook your favorite food. You can even look for ingredients that are specific to your country and prepare some traditional food.
4. Call home
This is an easy one! Since KeepCalling.com is always here for you, you have no excuse not to call your loved ones whenever you miss them. KeepCalling offers you the clearest calls at the lowest rates and a user friendly service, that’s a promise!
5. Congratulate yourself
What you’re doing is not easy. Not many people have the courage and the determination to change their lives and move away from home. Living abroad is challenging, but it is also rewarding. You’ll see so many new things, meet new people, experience a different culture, and create memories you can tell your grandchildren about. It might seem hard at times, but it will be worth it in the long run. Congratulations!
