When a holiday is approaching, we start thinking about it as we make the necessary preparations and also realize how fast a year has gone by since the last time we celebrated it. Memories of what we did in the past on this particular occasion keep popping into our heads unwillingly and we feel more in touch with ourselves and with our past.
These are the exact feelings that I get these days, just ahead of Mother’s Day. I remember the cards I used to make so clumsily, the abstract drawings and the silly poems I used to write for her. They all make me smile now, but I did put my heart and soul into them when I was little and I know my mom appreciated them. They were my way of expressing my love and admiration for her.

What I also think about as I start looking for a nice Mother’s Day gift for my mom is the fact that now, as an adult, I realize she was right about a ridiculous number of things. I always thought I knew better, I always asked her to stay out of my decisions, but she was right about so many things. She just knew. Was it a hunch, her sixth sense, or just her mother intuition?
When we are little we feel we don’t need advice from our parents, but as we grow up we realize their opinions are so important and almost always true. For instance, my mom taught me that education would get me wherever I want in life and that I should always work hard for what I want to achieve.
My mother is one of the strongest people I know and she inspires me to never give up. As we all know, personal example is so much more effective than mere theory.
